The receptors on your cell membranes fail to recognize or respond to this insulin appropriately. Think of it as a "lock and key" malfunction; the key (insulin) is available, but the lock (receptor) has changed its shape or sensitivity, refusing to open the door for glucose to enter the cell

:Symptoms

 When Your Body Speaks: High insulin levels don't just stay in the blood; they affect your tissues. Common physical signs include

  • Acanthosis Nigricans: Dark, velvety patches of skin, typically found around the neck and armpits
  • Skin Tags: Small, benign growths often appearing in the same areas.
  • Constant Hunger (Polyphagia): Since your cells aren't getting glucose effectively, they send "starvation signals" to your brain, making you feel hungry even after eating

Sample & Preparation

  • Patient Status: The patient must be fasting for 6–8 hours. We need to measure the "basal" insulin secretion without the stress or spike caused by a recent meal.
  • Specimen: Serum is required. In the lab, we use a Yellow Gel Tube or a Red Tube to separate the serum.

 normalization factor derived from the physiology of a standard healthy individual (ideal body weight ~70kg).

  • If a person has normal insulin sensitivity (100% function) and normal beta-cell function, multiplying their fasting values and dividing by 405 yields a result of 1.
  • Therefore, 1 is the baseline for health. A result significantly higher than 1 indicates resistance
